Dr. Ken Fox

Emergency Veterinarian

‘I enjoy the fast pace and the case variety of Emergency Medicine, but the most important part of the job for me- the reason I founded WECARE- lies in the ability to help pets and their owners through difficult times.’

Education: B.S. in Microbiology from University of California DVM, Ross University, School of Veterinary Medicine, 1997

Dr Fox has been on the forefront of emergency veterinary medicine for almost 20 years. He and his wife Valerie, opened their first hospital, Veterinary Emergency Treatment Services (VETS) in Waldorf in 1996 and the first 24 hour veterinary hospital – the Southern Maryland Veterinary Referral Center- in the state of Maryland. Dr. Fox’s focus at WECARE is on caring and compassionate state of the art veterinary medicine as well as friendly, communicative relationships with pet owners and family veterinarians.

Dr. Fox is also the past owner and veterinarian of the Glymont Animal Hospital in Indian Head MD providing comprehensive preventative care medicine. His professional interests include surgery, ultrasound, endoscopy and complicated critical patients. Dr. Fox, his wife Valerie, and their 14 year old daughter live on a large horse farm in Southern Maryland. They breed and show Hanovarian sport horses. They have had 2 horses compete in the pentathlon world championships and their daughter is an avid show jumper and polocrosse player.  When he’s not at the hospital Dr Fox enjoys the horses, but does not ride, he plays golf, bikes, and scuba dives.

Dr. Nancy C. McGuire


Dr. Nancy C. McGuire has lived and practiced veterinary medicine in the Southern Maryland area for 16 years.  Dr. McGuire graduated with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University. She then completed an internship at Louisiana State University in small animal medicine and surgery.  Following her internship, she completed a 3-year residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Illinois.  While at Illinois, she published a retrospective article in the Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association.  Upon finishing her residency, she successfully completed extensive examinations to become board certified in Veterinary Internal Medicine.

After her residency, Dr. McGuire relocated to Waldorf to work with Dr. Kenneth Fox at Southern Maryland Veterinary Referral Center (SMVRC).  For 15 years, she worked in Internal Medicine, Emergency medicine and Oncology at SMVRC.   Her main case load consisted of ultrasound exams with Internal Medicine consult for sick patients.

Dr. McGuire offers complete Internal Medicine, Oncology and Emergency services at Waldorf Emergency Care – WECARE.  Internal Medicine cases including regulating Diabetics and other endocrine cases; working up and diagnosing chronic disease such and vomiting, diarrhea and coughing or asthma. Diagnostics may include ultrasound of the chest and or abdomen, endoscopy of the gastrointestinal tract or lungs. 

Many patients with cancer visit Dr. McGuire for diagnostics, staging and chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is often very successful in extending a good quality of life in many cancer patients, such as those with Lymphoma. 

Dr. Mcguire continues to update her knowledge in Internal Medicine by attending the specialty conference, American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine every year.  She is also a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, and the American Association of Feline Practitioners.  In the community, Dr. Mcguire assists many rescue groups including Rescue Angels of Southern Maryland.  She has volunteered her time helping with spay and neuter clinics, Rabies clinics and providing medical care for  rescue patients.

Dr. Tim Slajchert


Dr. Tim Slajchert (“Dr. Tim” is acceptable if the last name gives you trouble) is a 1993 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine.  After graduation, Dr. Slajchert spent an additional year in school completing a Master of Science Degree, also at University of Illinois.  He then went into general practice in New Jersey (his home state) for 18 months, which was long enough to cure him of that.  He moved to Maryland and started practicing emergency medicine in 1996, and has been practicing emergency medicine in some form or another since then.
Dr. Tim’s special interests are epidemiology and emergency/critical care.  He especially likes managing challenging medical cases.
Dr. Tim grew up in north New Jersey (one town over from Tony Soprano, so if you need somebody whacked …).  He is a husband and the proud father of 17 year old triplets (2 girls and a boy), who currently live in York, PA.  In Pennsylvania is also an English mastiff (Sophie), a bulldog mix named Georgia, 3 wacky cats, an insane cockatoo named Beakers, several parakeets, a guinea pig and a fish … Dr. Slajchert has just realized while typing this that he ought to call his home a zoo and start charging admission.  Dr. Slajchert is a big fan of the Ravens and still holds season tickets for the team.  He also roots for the Baltimore Orioles, who were last World Champions at a time before all of his patients and most of his staff were born.  He is a self-confessed Disney nerd and can be found in the company of Mickey Mouse as often as his wallet allows.

Dr. Emily Bowers


Dr. Emily Bowers is a Maryland native who grew up in Prince George’s County. She attended University of Maryland College Park and received a bachelor’s degree in Animal Sciences. She then went on to receive her veterinary degree with highest honors from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. While at Ross University, she completed her clinical rotations at University of Illinois. Dr. Bowers currently lives in Anne Arundel County with her 4 dogs, husband and young son. In her free time she enjoys riding horses, spending time with her family or just relaxing while watching Netflix.

Marvin Baynes DVM


Dr Baynes BioDr. Marvin A Baynes, Jr. is a graduate of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science in 1993. After a three year stint as a Disease Intervention Specialist with the Philadelphia Department of Public Health he attended Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine. He received his D.V.M. from Tuskegee in 2000. He resides in Waldorf Maryland but maintains strong ties to his home town of Philadelphia, PA. Dr Baynes is the proud father of one child, Marvin Baynes, III. He is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and a huge Eagles, Sixers, Phillies and Flyers fan. Dr Baynes is also a motorcycle enthusiast with the goal of riding through every state in this country.
